WKU baseball updates — SBC Tournament style

26 05 2010

First thing’s first, the Sun Belt announced the 2010 SBC All-Conference squads this evening. Western Kentucky had five players take honors, led by senior pitcher Matt Ridings.

Ridings was named the league’s 2010 Pitcher of the Year and was honored as a first-team selection. The WKU senior currently has 34 career victories, which is tied for the most all-time in Sun Belt history.

Joining Ridings on the first team were reliever Rye Davis, outfielder Kes Carter and catcher Matt Rice. Second baseman Matt Payton was honored as a second-team selection.

Speaking of Ridings, the latest update on WKU’s staff ace is still pretty inconclusive. As we reported in the Daily News today, WKU coach Chris Finwood said that he’s still not sure about the status of Ridings for this week’s Sun Belt Tournament.

As many of you may recall, Ridings suffered a right elbow injury (his throwing arm) during last Friday’s series opener against Middle Tennessee.

Ridings said after the game that he had a feeling in his elbow he’d ‘never felt before’ but didn’t hear anything pop. Finwood said on Monday that the team would get several opinions from doctors on the condition of Ridings’ elbow, and a decision would then be made after that.

Finwood did say, however, that Ridings won’t pitch in games one or two of the tournament.

WKU opens the SBC Tourney as the No. 8 seed at 12:30 p.m. on Wednesday against No. 1 Florida Atlantic in Murfreesboro, Tenn.
