Phil Steele All-SBC squad

31 05 2010

I’m a few days late on this one, but the Phil Steele All-Sun Belt 2010 football squad came out recently.

Western Kentucky senior inside linebacker Thomas Majors is the lone Hilltopper on the first team.

WKU junior running back Bobby Rainey earns a second-team nod, while sophomore tight end Jack Doyle, junior tackle Wes Jeffries and junior kicker Casey Tinius landed on the third team. Rainey also made the team as a kick returner.

Phil also did a fourth team (which seems a bit wild if you ask me), and WKU senior inside linebacker Chris Bullard joins sophomore defensive tackle Kenny Martin on that list.

I really don’t have much of a problem with the first-team list here, but I wouldn’t read too far into this (or many other of these early nationally syndicated all-SBC teams for that matter), because quite frankly, they’re simply based on statistics from the previous year. For example, Kenny Martin gets on the fourth team – but he’s not even slated as a starter on WKU’s most recent depth chart.

Go figure.

In any event, here’s the first team as it stands for 2010:

QB: Dwight Dasher (MTSU)

RB: Aldred Morris (FAU), Frank Goodin (ULM)

WR: Jerrel Jernigan (Troy), Jamaal Jackson (UNT), T.Y. Hilton (FIU)

TE: Ladarius Green (ULL)

C: Tyler Clark (Troy)

G: Kelvin Drake (UNT), Brandon McLeroy (MTSU)

T: Esteban Santiago (UNT), Mark Fisher (MTSU)

DE: Troy Evans (ULM), Jamal Lattimore (MTSU)

DT: Bryan Hall (ASU), Shavod Atkinson (UNT)

LB: Craig Robertson (UNT), Thomas Majors (WKU), Grant Fleming (ULL)

CB: Anthony Gaitor (FIU), Bryan Willis (Troy)

SS: Marcus Bartela (FAU)

FS: Jeremy Kellem (MTSU)

P: Spencer Ortego (ULL)
