Unofficial All-Sun Belt freshman basketball team

21 06 2010

I forgot to pass this one along last week, but here’s the final tally on the unofficial All-Sun Belt Freshman Basketball Team.

The team was voted on by 12 Sun Belt beat writers – including yours truly.

The only WKU player cracking the list was guard Caden Dickerson.

And oddly enough, as we know now, perhaps the best player on the list – former Arkansas State guard Brandon Reed – no longer plays in the Sun Belt.

Without further adieu:
G – Brandon Reed, Arkansas State – Averaged team-high 15.1
points, 3.4 rebounds and 2.5 assists. Voted Sun Belt Freshman of the Year and
second team all-conference.
G – Greg Gantt, FAU — Averaged team-high 15.6 points, 2.4
rebounds, 1.0 assists and 0.7 steals per game. Was fifth in Sun Belt in
scoring. Was third team all-conference.
G – Ray Taylor, FAU — Averaged 14.2 points, 5.9 assists, 3.0
rebounds and 1.4 steals per game. Was 11th nationally in assists. Was 13th in
Sun Belt in scoring. Was third team all-conference.
F – Chase Hallam, Denver — Averaged 10.1 points, 3.8
rebounds, 2.1 assists and 1.3 steals. Shot 52.8 percent from the floor and
49.5
percent from 3-point range.
F — Martino Brock, South Alabama — Averaged 11.7 points, 6.3
rebounds, 1.9 assists and 1.4 steals per game.

Honorable mention
G — Carl Blair, UNO; Trey Finn, Arkansas State; Raymone
Andrews, Cajuns; James Gallman, MTSU; Colby Carr, ULM; Caden Dickerson, WKU;
F — Brandon Peterson , Arkansas State; Jacob Holmen, UNT; DeMonte Simpson, FAU;
Javier Carter, South Alabama.

Comeback Player of the Year
Sanchez Hughley, FAU, F, Jr. — Averaged 9.4 points and 4.7
rebounds with two double-doubles this season after missing last year with a
blood clot in right lung that required one-third of his lung to be removed.
Suffered a torn labrum earlier in his college career.
