Basketball: Tops to tip-off season vs. Minnesota

5 08 2010

It appears the Hilltoppers won’t open the Puerto Rico Tip-Off against North Carolina:

Per WKU:

WKU will face Minnesota in the first round of the 2010 Puerto Rico Tip-Off on Thursday, November 18 at 6:30 PM (CT), and tickets are on-sale now with additional travel packages to be announced at a later date.

The Hilltoppers and the Golden Gophers are part of an eight-team field that includes 2010 Final Four participant West Virginia, perennial power North Carolina, Vanderbilt and Davidson, among others. Games will be played November 18, 19 and 21 at the Coliseo de Puerto Rico in San Juan, P.R. The combined 2009-10 record of this year’s eight tournament participants was 167-107 (.609).

“We are excited about the opportunity to participate in the 2010 Puerto Rico Tip-Off,” WKU head coach Ken McDonald said. “This year features an outstanding field and will definitely provide some great early season challenges for our team. At WKU, we continue to schedule aggressively in our efforts to play one of the toughest schedules in the nation, and participating in this first-class event helps us achieve that goal. Our hope is that the Hilltopper faithful will enjoy traveling with us to a great destination at the start of the 2010-11 season.”

WKU and Minnesota have never met on the hardwood, although fourth-year Golden Gopher head coach Tubby Smith was the coach of the fourth-ranked Kentucky team that the Hilltoppers upset at Rupp Arena on November 15, 2001, 64-52.

All 12 games of the 2010 Puerto Rico Tip-Off are scheduled to be televised by the ESPN family of networks, although no television information is currently available for the WKU-Minnesota opening-round matchup. Should WKU beat
Minnesota, the Hilltoppers would advance to play the winner of the Hofstra-North Carolina game on November 19 at 7:30 PM (CT) on ESPNU.
