Rainey on Hornung watch list

17 08 2010

Per a WKU release:

Western Kentucky  junior running back Bobby Rainey is one of 48 players on the watch list for the inaugural Paul Hornung Award that will be given annually to the most versatile player in major college football.  The award is being present by Hornung and the Louisville Sports Commission.

There are 25 seniors, 18 juniors and five sophomores on the list, representing all 11 conference that are part of the NCAA Football Bowl Subdivision.  Rainey is joined by three other Sun Belt Conference players — Middle Tennessee’s Dwight Dasher, Florida International’s T.Y. Hilton and Troy’s Jerrel Jernigan.

Most candidates had a minimum of three different “touches” in 2009 — catching, running, passing, returning kicks and punts, holding for placements, tackling, deflecting/intercepting passes or recovering fumbles.

Rainey certainly more than qualifies after leading the Sun Belt Conference — and ranking eighth nationally — with 2,101 all-purpose yards in 2009.  The Griffin, Ga., product rushed for a team-best 929 yards, while also catching 13 passes for 83 yards.  He also ranked as one of the top return men in the league, racking up a school-record 1,050 kickoff return yards, and returning four punts for 29 yards.

A selection committee will narrow the Watch List down to 10-15 finalists at the end of the 2010 regular season in early December, then will select the winner at or near the end of the bowl season in early January.
