Antonio Andrews update

21 08 2010

A source with knowledge of the situation told the Daily News this afternoon that former Fort Campbell standout quarterback Antonio Andrews – who was named Mr. Football last season in Kentucky – is not yet an official member of the WKU football team, though it appears he could be sooner than later.

The source said that Andrews – who recently left the Air Force prepatory academy – still needs to go through several NCAA clearance procedures before he can actually begin practicing at WKU.

Since Andrews was technically at the Air Force prep school, he’s officially a recruit – and thus, WKU coach Willie Taggart cannot speak directly about him until he’s officially a member of the Hilltopper football team.

The source did confirm that there is mutual interest between the two parties, however, and that if the proper clearance and paperwork is finalized – Andrews could be part of the team soon and would be eligible to play this fall.

Andrews went 29-0 as a starter for Fort Campbell High School, who won its third consecutive Class 2A state championship this past season.

UPDATE 8/23:

Zach Greenwell and Jonathan Lintner, our good pals at the College Heights Herald, had a few updates on Andrews’ situation this afternoon.

Greenwell spoke with Fort Campbell football coach Shawn Berner, who said the former Kentucky Mr. Football is on campus here in Bowling Green with intention to enroll at the school. Lintner spoke with Andrews himself, who confirmed as much, saying he’s on campus and hopes to play running back with the Hilltoppers.

Again, WKU coach Willie Taggart would be committing an NCAA violation if he speaks about Andrews to any type of media outlet, so once he gets cleared – this becomes official, and we’ll be able to bring more.

But like we reported over the weekend, the only hurdle here is the NCAA Clearinghouse – which could be taken care of at some point this week it seems.
