Andrews cleared to play

25 08 2010

Former Fort Campbell High School standout – and 2009 Kentucky Mr. Football – Antonio Andrews is officially a member of the Western Kentucky football team.

Andrews was cleared to play today and participated in his first practice with the squad, wearing No. 24 and playing running back.

Andrews originally committed to play at Air Force this past winter, and was sent to play at the institution’s preparatory school. Andrews never actually played for the prep school, deciding to leave and enroll at WKU – where he is now on a football scholarship and is eligible as a true freshman for this season.

Western Kentucky coach Willie Taggart wouldn’t rule out a redshirt for Andrews at this point in time, leaving a possibility that he could play right away.

“If he can come in here and show that he can help us, he’s going to help us,” Taggart said after practice. “Right now it’s just a matter of getting him out here, getting him running around and see what he can do.

“Whenever you get the (prep) player of the year – I don’t care what state it is – it’s exciting. Now, as coaches, we’ve got to see what he’s good at and put him in the right place so that he can do that.”

Andrews ran for 1,597 yards and 29 touchdowns, and threw for another 1,667 yards and 28 touchdowns for the Class 2A state champion Fort Campbell squad last season.

Andrews led the Falcons to a 29-1 record and two state titles over the past two seasons.

“We’re welcoming him with open arms, he wasn’t happy where he was and he was a guy that we were high on when we got here,” Taggart said. “We were hoping that it would work out, and it did.”

Taggart declined to make Andrews available to the media following Wednesday’s workout, but did say that the freshman will remain at running back for the time being.

I’ll have a full story on Andrews’ situation in Thursday’s Daily News.
