Tops not talking Elson

13 09 2010

A familiar face will be involved in the discussion this week as Western Kentucky prepares for its  home opener Saturday against Indiana, that being former head coach David Elson.

Elson – who was fired midway through the 2009 season, his seventh as the program’s head coach – is currently a defensive quality control coach at Indiana.

When asked to talk on the subject Monday, current WKU coach Willie Taggart didn’t really have much to say.

“I don’t think that plays a factor in this ball game, we’re playing Indiana University, not coach Elson,” Taggart said. “He did a lot of good things here, I learned a lot of things from him that I apply to how I work now.

“That’s pretty much it.”

Elson himself declined an interview request from the Daily News on Sunday.

As for the players, most of whom were recruited to WKU by Elson, the reaction was more or less the same as Taggart’s.

“We have a new team,” WKU junior running back Bobby Rainey said. “We have a coach with us now, and that’s who we’re focused on.

“We’re not focused on last year.”
