FIU’s Mario Cristobal talks Tops

4 10 2010

Florida International coach Mario Cristobal answered a few questions about Western Kentucky this morning on the weekly Sun Belt Conference coaches’ call.

Here’s what he had to say:

On WKU overall:

“I’ve had a chance to watch them on film, they’ve done a great job on offense and defense and have increased their playmaking ability,” he said. “It’s a team we respect and our guys are looking forward to it.”

On Saturday’s game:

“They do a lot of stuff on offense, a lot of shifts, a lot of motions and have a very talented quarterback in Kawaun Jakes and a tremendous tailback in Bobby Rainey,” he said. “What I’ve noticed is that their offensive line is much more physical, they’ve found playmakers and they’re playing with a lot of energy.

“We always thought they had talent, they were always a team that we thought was getting better and improving – it should be a heck of a game.”

About facing a team with a 24-game losing streak:

“When you’re looking at opponents, they become nameless and faceless,” he said. “Being in that locker room, when you’re battling and stuff, there’s always a chip on your shoulder and there’s always added incentive.
“It’s not about streaks or coaches, it’s about two conference teams playing their first conference game.”

On whether he thinks WKU is competing more now:

“That’s for their staff to decide,” he said. “I just think they’re a good football team. We have a tremendous amount of respect for them and we’re looking forward to playing them on Saturday. “
