WKU-FAU postgame comments

WKU coach Willie Taggart:

On his team’s performance Saturday:

“We did everything except win. We didn’t do a good job throwing the ball, penalties hurt us and we just didn’t do anything offensively to help our team.”

“We’ve just got to get back to work and find a way to win, and we’ve done it already, so it’s not like we don’t know how. I love these guys. They’re fighting. They’re working their tails off. There’s nobody that’s more disappointed than these guys. They’re working every single week, every single day and they’re the ones that matter.

“We’re going to keep working, we’re going to stay together and we’re going to get this thing done.”

On the team’s passing woes:

“I was wondering the same thing. Why aren’t we getting open? Why isn’t the quarterback scrambling? 8-of-24, that just sucks.”

“I don’t think (sophomore quarterback Kawaun Jakes) played to his potential. “I really thought he was pressing and not playing like he was capable of. In no way did he have his best ballgame. It was probably his worst.”

“I thought (the wide receivers) had energy. They came ready to play. It was just unfortunate that (leading receiver Marcus Vasquez) got hurt there and didn’t come back. I can’t say until I watch the tape about what exactly happened, but I want to know – we go 8-of-24, something’s wrong there.”

On Bobby Rainey going over the 1,000-yard mark:

“It was good. Like I’ve said before, he’s one good thing we have going for us right now and we need that with where we’re at in our program. Whenever you have something good going like that it’s good for your football team.
“It’s something we can build off of and it’s something we will build off of.”

On his decision not to go for two after a third quarter score that put WKU up 15-14:

“It was too early in the game (for that). That wasn’t a thought. We were just going to go for the extra point and move on. It was too early in that ballgame to go for two.”

On the team’s nine penalties:

“All year long we’d been pretty good from a penalty standpoint. Unfortunately we had a bad day with it, and it came at critical times and it hurt us.”

On a personal foul call that pushed WKU out of scoring range following a first-half interception:

“Again, a penalty takes us out of field goal range. That hurt us big time. Whenever you get a turnover like that you’ve got to capitalize.”

Taggart said following the game that Vasquez’s injury was a collarbone situation, though he wasn’t clear on his status moving forward. Sophomore tight end Jack Doyle also didn’t play Saturday, missing his second straight contest with a neck injury.

Too early for 2? Not with this team. We could be up 400 points in the first quarter and not be assured of a win.
