WKU football game with Hawaii in 2012 gets pushed back

11 05 2011

Per a Hawaii release:

HONOLULU – University of Hawai’i Athletics Director Jim Donovan announced the addition of the University of South Alabama to the 2012 football schedule.  The teams will close out the regular season with a game on Dec. 1 at Aloha Stadium.

The Jaguars replace Western Kentucky on the 2012 schedule. The Hilltoppers, out of the Sun Belt Conference, will meet the Warriors in a future season to be determined.

The South Alabama football program is currently in just its third year of existence. The program began competition in 2009 and will be in its second transitional season as an FBS program when the teams meet in 2012. The Jaguars will be competing in the Sun Belt Conference in 2013.
WKU senior associate athletic director Todd Stewart tells the Daily News that WKU did not want to make a trip to Honolulu in December of 2012 so close to finals week. In addition, should WKU qualify for a bowl that season, the trip to Hawaii, finals and a possible bowl date would all be crammed within a matter of two weeks.

Stewart added that a possible date being explored for a Hawaii game is sometime in September of 2018 – or possibly the season opener of that season.
