The coaching carousel continues to spin

16 05 2011

I’d mentioned earlier this month that with the retirement of Maryland coach Gary Williams coming so late, that the coaching carousel would need some WD-40.

Williams retires, Maryland hires Mark Turgeon from Texas A&M, Texas A&M hires Billy Kennedy from Murray State.

The Racers are now on the clock as the wheels continue to turn.

And as is often the case in these situations, rampant speculation hits hard.

Like this tidbit today from CBS basketball insider Jon Rothstein:

Now obviously there isn’t anything concrete to that, but that’s often part of how these things work.

And before we get any further, I’ve already received inquiries about whether or not Western Kentucky assistant Ray Harper would be a candidate for the vacant Murray State slot.

All I can tell you on that one is that WKU told me today that it has not heard anything one way or another from coach Harper on any contact from Murray State about anything.

And for the record, I’m not going to ever get into any type of speculation here without any concrete information. That’s just not responsible.

And since we’re talking about coaching vacancies, now would be as good a time as any to pass along information about WKU’s current third assistant vacancy. WKU senior associate athletic director Todd Stewart told me last week that nothing is imminent with regard to filing that position as of now. So we’ll have to stay tuned on that, as the Hilltopper staff may in fact be focusing on finishing its 2011 recruiting class before getting into any further personnel decisions.

But hey, the carousel just started spinning again – and it’s only Monday. So I guess we’ll have to stay tuned.
