WKU’s path to the Sun Belt final

28 02 2011

The Sun Belt Tournament brackets haven’t been finalized just yet, as North Texas visits UALR tomorrow in a game that will decide the No. 4 seed in the SBC West (game was pushed back due to weather earlier this month).

With that in mind, let’s take a look at WKU’s path to the Sun Belt final.

First round: Louisiana-Monroe

– We know this one for sure, as that matchup is already locked in. ULM finished last in the Sun Belt this season, and recorded just two league victories.

WKU beat the Warhawks 81-61 earlier this season at Diddle Arena.

Should the Tops win here …

Quarterfinals: Louisiana-Lafayette

– The winner of the WKU-ULM game gets the West No. 2-seeded Ragin’ Cajuns, who take an 11-game win streak into the conference tourney.

ULL started the season 3-14, but turned it on late and captured a share of the West title.

ULL beat WKU 67-64 in Lafayette on Feb. 19 – a game that saw the Hilltoppers nearly erase a 17-point halftime deficit before falling late.

Should WKU win here …

Semifinals: FAU or UNT/UALR/Troy

– If seeds hold, this would be a matchup with Florida Atlantic, a team WKU beat in Boca Raton earlier this season but lost to at Diddle Arena.

The winner of UALR and UNT gets the West No. 4 seed, and will face Troy in the first round. The winner of that matchup gets FAU in the quarters. WKU split with Troy, and beat both UALR and UNT this season.

So, against its side of the bracket (including both UNT and UALR) WKU sits at 5-3 on the season.

If WKU wins here …

Sun Belt Final: Denver/MTSU/FIU/ASU/USA/UNT or UALR.

– If it gets this far, we’ll hash it out then.
